RECAP | Service Week

Last week 170 downtowners spent almost 30 hours volunteering at 11 organizations across the city. These hours of service wrapped up our sermon series on Poverty in a tangible way.

Below are a few quotes from the week! If you’d like to volunteer or support any of the places we served, they are linked below.

Harvest Hope

There were about 18 of us, gathering from different neighborhoods and a wide range of ages. We packed over 750 boxes of food for school children to take home on weekends. Everyone was amazed at the efficient productivity of the use of volunteers and how this impacts the services Harvest Hope offers its recipients. The staff went above and beyond to get us started, replenish supplies and make us feel valued. A bonus was making new friends at DTC! — Mary Body, Harvest Hope

Many of the volunteers who served by assembling “Blessing Baskets” were not familiar with the service Home works provides to the community, including me. We learned of their mission to make repairs to homes that enable residents to remain in place, often working with elderly and widows. This was a project in which children could participate, filling baskets and writing wonderful letters to the recipients, letting them know they are loved. Each basket is valued around $100, a wonderful gift with essential cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items, things we often take for granted. Several families were tasked with delivering the baskets in the next couple of weeks. Many hands make light work and it was a fun project! — Kirkland Smith, Home Works

It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to spend time in service of Senior Resources with our DTC family. I enjoyed meeting new friends and connecting with old ones while helping an organization that does so much for our community. Many in our group were very interested to learn about Senior Resources's mission, how they have adjusted their services recently in light of funding and economic challenges, and ways in which they can volunteer more there. We had a group larger than their average packing crew which Senior Resources was well-prepared to handle. After we all found our rhythm, we knocked out daily meal prep for over 400 clients in less than an hour! With our extra time, we were able to help out SRI by writing Christmas cards to include in meals come the Holiday season. — Paul Greathouse, Senior Resources

Homeless No More

We were grateful for the opportunity to help with the Trunk or Treat at Homeless No More. We enjoyed helping the youth decorate and pass out candy, and it was so special to see how excited they were to be there and how generous they were with the children and families. Their enthusiasm made the event even more meaningful and was a reminder of how much joy comes from giving to others. It was a blessing to be part of an event that brought the community together and allowed us to share God’s love in a tangible way. — Kaitlin Knight-Duggan, Homeless No More (Trunk or Treat)

Homeless No More Trunk or Treat

We had the best time helping Marcy with the Eden Community garden. She was a blessing and is doing wonderful things for her community. We helped her clean up the garden, the greenhouse and weed the boxes so they can get ready for spring planting of vegetables. Marcy was not sure how DTC heard about there garden but felt so blessed we were there to help. We are the blessed ones.. excited to continue to help them in the spring.. what a wonderful thing they are doing. —Leslie Biddle, Eden Community Garden
