DTK Lesson | 5.10.2020

Today’s lesson is another story that relates to Easter.  We have been learning so many details about the events that happened before Easter and the Resurrection and this story is another important one.

This event took place on the evening when Jesus and the disciples shared the Passover meal. When they were in the room together, Jesus had a talk with them.  Jesus wanted to prepare them for His death, but also for what would come after His death.

Jesus said to the disciples:

Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God. And trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  (Children’s International Bible)

Jesus knew that the disciples would be afraid.  The things that were going to take place over the next three days and beyond were going to be scary.  Jesus wanted the disciples to remember that they already knew and trusted God, and that they already knew and trusted HIm so they shouldn’t worry.  They had been following Jesus for several years now and knew the things that Jesus and His Father could do, so Jesus wanted the disciples to focus on those things in times of trouble,  instead of on the trouble that was surely ahead of them.

When Jesus told the disciples that He was going to leave them, but would prepare a place for them, I wonder where they thought that place was.   Jesus called it a place with many rooms.  A house with enough rooms for each of the disciples has got to be a pretty large house!  Imagine a house with enough rooms for the disciples and all of us too!  How many rooms would that huge house have to have in it?  Can there be a house that big?  Maybe Jesus was not really describing a house.  What could Jesus have been describing instead if not a big house?  This might be a clue...when Jesus died He went to be with His Father.

People prepare places for you all the time.  When you were about to be born, someone prepared a place for you.  What do you think they did to prepare for you?  (Discuss)

When you go to school someone prepares a place for you.  Even now, someone has prepared a place for you to do school at home.  What do you think they did to prepare for you?  What do you do to prepare for school?  (Discuss)

When you go visit your grandparents, or other relatives, someone prepares a place for you.  Families put a lot of time and care into preparing for a visit from somebody they love.  What do you think they do to prepare for your visits?  What do you do to prepare for a visit with relatives?  (Discuss)

When Jesus said that He was preparing a place, Jesus meant a place for us too!  What has Jesus done to prepare this place for us?   (Discuss)

ACTIVITIES

What do you imagine, when you think of this place that Jesus said He would prepare for us? Do you think it is a building, a place, or something else?  Draw what you think it is like.
