CHARTY | Meet the Elders

At the chartering service on December 5, the new congregation will elect elders. In the Presbyterian Church (USA) there are two types of elders - ruling elders and teaching elders. Me (Amos) is a teaching elder. The rest of the elders are ruling elders. In the future, the congregation will nominate and elect three ruling elders each year. The elders-elect pictured below served as the guidance team for the church prior to our chartering. So, it seemed natural that they continue to serve in that leadership role through our transition.

Being an elder has nothing to do with age. As you can see and read below, the Session (made up of teaching and ruling elders) is a faithful representation of the congregation. The session governs the church as informed by our Book of Order and Book of Confessions, the two documents that together form the Constitution of the PCUSA.

[box type="alert" ]Four elder-elects did not respond to the questions despite warnings that any delay would result in me taking liberty with their responses.[/box]

What do you like to do when you are not at DOWNTOWN CHURCH?

Since my job demands a lot of time behind a desk. I always enjoy working with my hands. Usually its renovating houses, working on projects, golfing or sport shooting. My most favorite thing when I am not at DTC is not being able to hear Amos' voice.

Who is your favorite family member?

I am definitely smart enough not to answer this question with two daughters and a beautiful wife at home. However, I am dumb enough to say my dog Addy. She never asks me what I want to eat for dinner this week, cries or has a diaper to change.

What is the last concert you attended?

The last concert I attended is when Amos preformed at open mic night. He sounded like a young Smokey Robinson.

Where do you see God at DOWNTOWN CHURCH?

I see God in the faces of the people who DTC has come to help. Its been amazing to see our reach in three short years. Its not about the people that come to church, its about the people our church touches.

What do you like to do when you are not at DOWNTOWN CHURCH?

When I’m not at church, I enjoy spending time at home and brushing up on my cooking skills.

Who is your favorite family member?

I wouldn’t say I have a favorite family member (I feel bad leaving out other members because I don’t favor one over the other), but I am close with my Dad. He is always the voice of reason for me, and he definitely keeps me grounded. I admire the work he’s done with war veterans, his patience, and his ability to handle stressful situations. He always encourages me to be better and do better. I strive to be more like him.

What is the last concert you attended?

The last concert I went to was Justin Timberlake in July and it was amazingggggg.

Where do you see God at DOWNTOWN CHURCH?

I see God in the music at Downtown Church. Some of the songs are just so inspirational in words and sounds. I enjoy the mix of traditional songs that I grew up with in the Presbyterian Church, as well as modern secular songs that are fitting for the service. It definitely gets my heart and mind ready for the sermon and overall worship.

Where do you see God at DOWNTOWN CHURCH

I see God in the faces that attend Downtown. It is in people that regularly attend and those that are attending for the first time. People can feel God amongst us. In celebration or in pain, our congregation is first and foremost built on the foundation of agape love.

What do you like to do when you are not at DOWNTOWN CHURCH?

Read, walk my pup at the river, cook, throw dinner parties, kayak, think of crazy crafts and projects with which to torture my nephews, find new ways to decorate my home with old treasures, listen to live music, dance, and sip cocktails.

Who is your favorite family member? Why?

A three-way tie! My nephews (ages 11, 7, 5) are wonderfully unique and completely themselves, and I adore them. I enjoy watching them learn the world around them, try out new things, have grand adventures, laugh uproariously, connect with others, be brave and kind, and live fully in the present. And the best part about being their aunt is being able to answer most of their questions with “Sure. Of course. Why not?”

When I’m not at Downtown Church I’m energized pursuing outdoor adventures - on the water, in the wilderness, ascending mountains, descending mountains - doing things smarter folks usually avoid.

Who is your favorite family member? Why?

Are you kidding? I have a wife and twin teenage daughters who are all lovely and intrepid. I know better than to choose a favorite (which, to be completely clear, I do not have).

What was the last concert you attended?

OK, be honest, be honest, be honest – One Direction. That admission hurt. But remember the twin teenage daughters? I’ll go to a concert really soon so I can change this answer - before too many people read it.

In the greeters at the door. They open the doors, but they also open their mouths to say a kind word, they open their eyes to look at everyone and they open their hearts by putting service above self.
